Smitten: Essential Oils
I have been wanting to jump on the essential oils train for awhile, but I have to admit I was skeptical. How could they possibly do ALL the things promised from stress relief to healing skin conditions to cleaning your home?
My first experience with oils came when I bought Sunshine Skin Toner at Sugaring LA waxing salon. It is a combination of tea tree oil, lavender and witch hazel. I was immediately obsessed since it’s so light and refreshing on my skin. Most importantly, it really does help with inflammation and reducing pores.
Now I was excited to try more.
When I launched my Self Care Sunday feature, Erin Newberry, a Young Living rep was so sweet to send me some products to sample. She is passionate about the benefits of oils and offered so much knowledge on how to incorporate them into my daily life. For instance, her favorite versatile oil is lavender. She says, “It has so many uses for our family! I diffuse in the kids’ room, can mix with coconut oil to support skin health, put a couple drops on my pillow to aid in restful sleep, or in the bathtub for a relaxing bath and add to a wet washcloth to toss in the dryer for better smelling clothes!”
I personally love the lavender bath bombs for a night of self care, just add relaxing music and a glass of sav blanc. Ahhhhhhh.
I had heard that oils could also help with cold and allergy symptoms. So, when my seasonal allergies started to bother me, I applied some peppermint oil to put on my temples. I was shocked that my symptoms subsided for a few hours!
Fun Fact: Smell is the only sense connected to the limbic lobe of the brain, the emotional control center. A scent can evoke an emotion before we are consciously aware of it.
I have been more interested in non toxic products after having a baby, so Erin sent me a cleaner called Thieves to mix with water. It has a strong lemony scent and a little goes a long way.
