Q: I need career advice. I have no clue what to do with my life. The problem is I have TOO many interests. I’ve been working at a salon the past few years as an assistant/front desk girl and I’m considering beauty school, but I also think I’d be good at interior design. Nursing is also something that I’ve been looking into. How do you pick one thing?
A: Choosing a major in college or a career path to pursue can be overwhelming. Especially if you have lots of interests. I would start with a personality test such as 16personalities.com to get a better idea of what your strengths and weaknesses are. It will even tell you what career paths are best suited for your personality. Now, of course we can’t rely on a test, but I think it’s a good starting point when we’re all over the board. I also love mind mapping as a useful tool when career planning. It helps you organize all your ideas and interests on paper. Cause when you think of your dream job and your future, I’ll bet you have a million thoughts that run through your mind. Check out my post to see how to create yours.
Next, you have to start networking. Get the real deal from actual nurses and interior designers so you can get an inside glimpse into what their day looks like. You work at a salon so you have a pretty good idea of what your day to day would be like as a stylist or esthetician. I suggest you go on linked in, put up a FB post, or start asking family/friends if they know any nurses or interior designers. Offer to meet them for coffee or set up a phone call so you can pick their brain about what it’s REALLY like to be in their field. Find out about the good, bad and ugly parts of the job. Ask if you can shadow for a few hours.
You will also want to look into college programs to see what classes are required and and how much tuition is going to cost. Talk to an admissions counselor about job placement assistance after graduation, typical salaries etc. Ask yourself-Are you willing to go to school for 4 years or are you looking for something quicker?
If you still don’t have a strong pull in one direction, I would sit down and write a list of pros and cons for each. The most important question to answer is At the end of day, which job would make you happiest and the most fulfilled?
