Q: I’m in that phase where I have to choose a career path. I went to college for theater and have landed some local acting jobs, but not enough to support myself. I have a sales job making a decent salary and was recently offered a promotion. If I take it, I won’t have as much time to dedicate to my acting. I’m so conflicted. Should suck it up and work a 9-5 or keep following my passion?
A: I wish the arts were not so difficult to make a living in! Unfortunately, the truth is they are. You have a big decision to make and it’s one that only you can decide. My advice is to not listen to other people’s opinions. Sure, take them into account, but ultimately, do what you feel in your gut.
Are you really ready to try this new venture in sales? Perhaps you have goals of a stable income, buying a house, a new car etc. If these goals take priority over acting, then you have your answer. Can you still fit acting in as a hobby? And are you okay with it being a hobby? Or do you still have that deep urge driving you to keep going with your acting?
I know it seems like you have waaay more questions than answers, but this will help you figure out what you really want and need at this moment in your life. Life is full of tough decisions that will shape your future. The great thing is that if you do down one road and have regrets, you can usually change course.
I will say this-don’t completely give up on acting. It sounds like it’s a big part of who you are and what makes you happy. Always dedicate some time, no matter how small to your passions.
