Q: I moved to a town outside of San Fran for a new job a few months ago. I’m super excited for a fresh start since I’ve lived in a small town in Michigan my whole life. It was time for a change! The only problem I’m running into is that I feel really lonely on the weekends. I want some new girlfriends to go to dinner with and to check out art galleries with. I work with a small team of mostly men, so work is out. How do you meet new friends as an adult?? It feels so awkward.
A: I’ve had this conversation with so many women. You’re definitely not alone and this issue is actually really common. Lots of people move to a new place and need to start over. Sometimes friends are just at different points in their life (AKA busy with work, marriage, kids) and don’t have as much time to devote to their social life. Or some people just love meeting new friends and having new experiences. Here are some of the best ways to meet new GFs. Don’t worry, if you step a little bit outside your comfort zone, you’ll be brunchin’ with some new friends in no time.
I know this works for a fact because I actually did this when I moved out of state. I joined a FB group for a blogger I’m obsessed with. Well, turns out a lot of really cool chicks are also obsessed with this lifestyle blog that promotes balance. This was a way to meet a lot of like minded women who are also into the same things I am. We decided to plan a meet up for lunch which was great-we chat about healthy recipes, natural skincare, and acupuncture pillows all over mimosas.
Meetup groups are an awesome way to meet people. There are meet ups for every interest you can think of-hiking, wine tastings, music, art, singles, volleyball…the list goes on. You’re next to a big city so there will be a ton of options. Do a little research online and jump right in.
Join a Specialized Studio or Gym
Work on toning your body and building your social circle-it’s a win-win! Depending on whatever you’re into or want to try out-yoga, meditation, kickboxing, cross fit-a smaller specialized gym is a great opportunity to meet some new GFs.
You may be so over online dating, but what about using technology to meet a new squad? From Bumble BFF, to Tinder Social, to Meet My Dog (Yes, it’s literally an app for dog owners to bond) to Atleto (for all you sporty gals) there is something for everyone.
Get Set Up
Ask your network if they have any friends they can introduce you to. It may bring on the same nerves as a blind date but remind yourself this isn’t high school anymore, you offer a lot to a friendship and YOU are your harshest critic.
Join a Book Club
Ok, ok, we all know book club is code for wine club with some short discussions of a book. 😉 Just another great way to meet a new group of people and have something in common to start the convo off.
